The move to containers

The concept of containers to deploy applications on top of large servers to handle changes in demand is not a new thing at all. LXC, FreeBSD Jails and VMWare have been around for a long time - what is different is that the work on Docker and CoreOS have made the user experience for an Operations Team so much more flexible and enjoyable.

This is the key, the latest work has created an interface such that all parts of the Operations stack can now automate containers in a way that isn’t requiring a lot of custom scripting.

Now we are seeing a renewed interest in this space as CoreOS is watching Docker pivot back to becoming an infrastructure company, Redhat joining the list with the Project Atomic, and even today with Ubuntu’s announcement of Ubuntu Core.

Another big reason for this shift grabbing a large foothold is that the supporting automation required to manage large container farms is also happening.

At &yet we are working actively at deploying the next generation of Talky.io using containers and we will be blogging and releasing all of our connecting/glue code as open source - so stay tuned for more details.

thanks
